Does the Medicare Program Confuse You?

Choosing a Medicare Insurance plan can be overwhelming. No one plan can be considered the best plan because the plan that is right for you depends on many factors. Learning the basics of how Medicare works is the first step to understanding which Medicare Insurance Plan may be the right fit for you.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

● Helps cover inpatient care in hosptials
● Helps cover skilled nursing facility, hospice, and home health care

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

● Helps cover doctors' services, outpatient care, and home health care
● Helps cover some preventative services to help maintain your health and to keep certain illnesses from getting worse

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)

● A health coverage option run by private insurance companies approved by and under contract with Medicare
● Includes Part A, Part B, and usually other coverages like prescription drugs

Medicare Part D (Medicare Prescriptiong Drug Coverage)

● A prescription drug option run by private insurance companies approved by and under contract with Medicare
● Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs
● May help lower your prescription drug costs and help protect against higher costs in future

Why Get a Supplemental Insurance Plan?

The Medicare program is designed as a cost sharing health insurance. You are responsible for the costs that Medicare does not cover. These costs are referred to as "gaps." These gaps leave you exposed to risk of financial hardship. Private insurance companies offer Medicare insurance plans to help Medicare beneficiaries cover these gaps.

►Gaps in Medicare ►Medicare Gap Solutions

2010 Medicare Part A

(Hospital Insurance)

Inpatient Hospital Care

● Days 1 - 60: $1,100 deductible

● Days 61 - 90: $275 per day

● Days 91 - 150: $550 per lifetime reserve day

2010 Medicare Part B

(Medical Insurance)

● Annual Deductible: $155

● Co-Insurance: 20% from beneficiary for Medicare Part B covered services

● Up to an additional 15% co-insurance from beneficiary possible in excess charges

Medicare Part C

(Medicare Advantage Plans)

Medicare Part C combines Part A and Part B into one plan provided by private insurance companies approved by and under contract with Medicare.

A Medicare Advantage plan must provide benefits as good as the original Medicare program.

● Medicare Advantage Plans tend to have zero or low monthly premiums

● Part D Prescription Drug plans can be included at no additional monthly premium

● Additional benefits may be included such as vision, dental, routine physical exams, transportation, nurse help lines and more

● Plans benefits provided via plan networks (HMO and PPO)

Medicare Part D

(Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage)

The original Medicare program consists of Part A (hospital) and Part B (Medical). Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) is optional.

If you would like to have prescription drug coverage, you must join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare prescription drug plans are available through private companies approved by and under contract with Medicare.

Medi-Gap Policy

(Medicare Supplement)

Medi-Gap policies are offred by private insurance companies that help cover SOME OR ALL of the deductibles and coinsurances that Medicare Part A and Part B charge Medicare beneficiaries for services rendered.

Currently there are 12 different Medicare Supplement Policies available to help Medicare beneficiaries cover the Medicare "gaps." Medicare Supplement plans are referred to by letter, currently Plans A - L. Beginning June 1, 2010, there will be 10 different plan options. Plans E, H, I, and J will be eliminated and plans M and N will be added.

● Plans may require medical underwriting depending on your situation

● Monthly plan premium depends on the Medi-Gap plan you choose, YOUR AGE, and the insurance company

● Some Medi-Gap policies offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover

Both Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) and Medi-Gap Policies (Medicare Supplements) help Medicare beneficiaries cover gaps in Medicare coverage. Which one is right for you depends on your particular situation. No one plan is right for everyone.
